Welcome to Dahlonega

Dahlonega MapDahlonega is an enchanting town located in Lumpkin county in the foothills of the North Georgia mountains, and is only an hour's drive north of Atlanta (via Hwy 400). Nominated one of the best places to retire by several publications (click here to read U.S. News and World Report's 06/07 article), it is a city of fantastic natural charm and a wonderful place to enjoy life as the days pass by. In addition to the beautiful setting, Dahlonega boasts a low cost of living, vibrant outdoor activities, continuing education for seniors, festivals, arts, wineries, and great restaurants and cafes.

Dahlonega was the site of the first US gold Rush in 1829, and with the many mines scattered around the area, was a booming town during the Georgia Gold Rush. This is also a reason why the Cherokees were forced out of the area to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears in 1838. In fact, the name, Dahlonega, dates back to 1833 and is a Cherokee word "Talonige" or "Dalonige", which means "yellow money" or "gold. The Dahlonega mint opened in 1838, and minted $1, $2.50, $3, & $5 coins, coining $6 million in gold before it closed in 1861.

Today, you can pan for gold at one of its gold mines, go for an underground mine tour, or visit the Dahlonega Gold Museum State Historic Site, which is showcased inside Georgia's oldest remaining courthouse on the historic square.

Dahlonega Town Square features charming shops, art studios, cafes, and restaurants. It is a popular tourist attraction, and home to many festivals throughout the year.
